ABOUT THE WINERY:

Founded in 1994 in the town of Barbaresco, the Montaribaldi Winery has had a clear focus on producing high-quality, single-vineyard wines that represent the terroir as much as possible. With a low-intervention winemaking approach and viticultural practices that keep eco-sustainability a priority, Montaribaldi works in harmony with nature and strives toward using energy from renewable resources.

This Barbera from Frere vineyard in Alba is packed with flavors of black cherries, star anise, and pepper. An amazingly polished wine with an almost syrup-like texture, high tannins, and a long and precise aftertaste that is backed up by a firm structure enables it to be cellared for years, or drank now.

Decant if Young: Letting Barbera Frere breathe enhances its fruit-forward character.
Serve slightly chilled (around 60°F/15-16°C) for a refreshing experience.

Meat Dishes

  • Roasted Chicken or Turkey: Light enough to let the wine shine but hearty enough to match its flavor.
  • Pork Dishes: Think pork tenderloin or chops with a balsamic glaze or cherry sauce.
  • Meatballs or Sausage: Especially in a tomato-based sauce, as the wine’s acidity pairs perfectly with tomatoes.

Pasta and Pizza

  • Tomato-Based Pasta Dishes: Spaghetti Bolognese, penne arrabbiata, or marinara-based pastas are classic matches.
  • Pizza Margherita: The wine’s acidity cuts through the richness of cheese and balances tomatoflavors.
  • Lasagna: Layers of pasta, ragù, and béchamel are an ideal companion to Barbera.

Cheeses

  • Mild to Semi-Hard Cheeses: Pecorino, Fontina, or mild goat cheese.
  • Blue Cheese: A subtle blue cheese with fruity notes can balance the wine’s bright acidity.

Vegetarian Options

  • Eggplant Parmesan: Barbera’s acidity complements the tomato sauce while matching the dish’s richness.
  • Mushroom Risotto: Earthy flavors and creamy textures balance Barbera’s lively profile.
  • Grilled Vegetables: Zucchini, peppers, and mushrooms drizzled with olive oil work beautifully.

Charcuterie and Antipasti

  • Salumi and Prosciutto: The wine’s acidity cuts through the fat in cured meats.
  • Olives and Sundried Tomatoes: Barbera complements salty and tangy antipasti well.

Seafood

  • Grilled Tuna or Swordfish: Barbera’s light tannins and acidity can work surprisingly well with meaty fish.
  • Cioppino or Fish Stews: Tomato-based seafood stews match its brightness.
